MY ESSAY ON PARALLELING THE GIVER TO MY SOCIETY
There are many examples of text from our media that parallel the book,
The Giver. Some of these examples are articles about Edward Snowden, U.S.
incarceration rates, Arizona’s ban on books, and songs such as muse. All of these texts
have strong evidence of how the Giver society parallels to our society.
The Edward Snowden situation parallels to the Giver society because they talk
about secrets. An example is, “ Snowden was supposed to keep secrets.” This parallels to
The Giver because Edward was supposed to keep the secrets and in The Giver, the giver has to keep all of the
secrets from the people like all of the memories. Another example is, “as an employee he was obligated to listen
to his bosses even if he disagreed.” This parallels to The Giver because the chief elders in the book told the giver
to keep all of the memories away from the people so they wont suffer but he disagreed and he wanted the
people to experience all of the pain, the colors, the real life of a human but he had to listen. The last example is, “
The information that Snowden leaked was important.” This parallels to The Giver because in the book a girl
named Rosemary chose to be released and every memory she had got sent out to the people, and they were
very important memories. All in all, the Edward Snowden article parallels to the giver because it talks about
secrets.
The article about incarcerating the population of the U.S., parallels to The Giver because it explores control.
An example is, “No country incarcerates a higher percentage of its population than the U.S.” this parallels to The
Giver because all of the people that live in the community, which is a lot, are all incarcerated, they all just don’t
know it. Another example is, “ Widespread incarceration.” This parallels to The Giver because the more people
that are born, the more the people become incarcerated in the community. The final example is, “ Although,
incarceration has a role to play.” This parallels to The Giver because the incarceration in the book makes sure that
the people are safe and don’t feel pain. Overall, the article on incarcerating parallels to The Giver because it talks
about control.
The article, Arizona’s ‘banned’ Mexican American books, parallels to The Giver because it talks about
banning books. An example of this is, “Arizona’s ‘banned’ Mexican American books.” This parallels The Giver
because the community does not let the people read books, so they banned them. Another example is, “
Confiscated from every classroom.” This parallels to The Giver because, not only did they take it away from the
houses but they took it away from the classrooms so the students wont learn. The last example is, “ Apparently,
people are not able to see any of the books.” This parallels to The Giver because the people could not even see
the books anywhere even in the buildings, classrooms, or in the houses. In conclusion, the article on banning
books parallels to The Giver because it talks about banning books.
The song, “Muse,” parallels to The Giver because it also talks about control and secrets. An example is, “
They’ll try to push drugs that keep us all dumbed down.” This parallels to The Giver because they both say that
they take pills like Jonas and the community has to take pills to stop stirrings and it keeps them from the truth
about feelings and in the song it makes them dumb. Another example is, “ Hope that we will never see the truth
again.” This parallels to The Giver because the chief elders don’t want the people to know the truth about the
outside world. The final example is, “ Another packaged lie to keep us trapped in greed.” This parallels to The Giver
because they are always lying to the people to keep them happy and stable. To conclude, the song, Muse,
parallels to the giver because it talks about secrets and control.
Overall, there are many examples of text from our media that parallel the book, The Giver. Some of these
